At the beginning of the 20th century, Joseph Pilates created a method based on his extensive knowledge of yoga, Tai Chi, Martial Arts. He called it Contrology. It is, in Joseph Pilates’ own words: ‘a complete coordination of the body, mind and spirit’ After his death, Contrology was renamed Pilates after its creator.
Pilates aims to strengthen core muscles in order to create a corset for lower back support, to mobilise the spine, take joints through healthy full range of motion, build the muscles around joints in order to prevent wear and tear, injuries and back pain. It teaches postural stability, a good balance and relaxation.
